~Solar Winds A variety of edit cheats (and info for beginners and lamers) ~By Simon Burrows `Here's a selection of edits for Epic Megagame's great shoot'em'up/ `role-playing shareware game: Solar Winds. The game is similar in `style to Safari's "Traffic Department 2092" but is set in a huge `expanse of the universe rather than a futuristic city. `To make the edits you will first need a save-game file, so if you `haven't already, press [F1] to get up the menu, then select the `save-game option. From the save menu, select the top slot as your `file's destination, then give it any description you fancy. `Now quit back to DOS and load up a hex-editor. When that's `loaded, pop-up the file HSAV01.DAT from your main Solar Winds `directory, and then make any of the following edits as required :- ~`Edit 1 - Changing the Power Distribution in your Ship ~`ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ `As you will probably know already, one feature of this game allows `you to change the distribution of power in your ship. This allows `you to boost certain sections of your ship which may be especially `important during certain intervals of the game. The different `ship-sections which you can change the power distribution to are: `weapons, life support, engines, sensors, fore shield, aft shield, `left shield and right shield. As you go through the game you will `gain more power to distribute around your ship, so you can then `increase the power each section of your ship receives. `Each section of your ship has its own maximum amount of power `which it can handle. Trying to give sections more power then `their respective maxima whilst in the game will do nothing! `However, by editing your save-game file you can boost the amount `of power sections of your ship have, to above the maxima laid out `in the game. For example, in the game your shields can only have `a total of 111gw of power, but if you change how much power they `get with my edit, you can give them 222gw and have twice as `effective shields! `Below are two edits you might use. Whichever one you do (the top `one or the bottom one) you would do it at the same hex-offset in `the save-game file. The top string of bytes will set the amount `of power each section of your ship can have to the maximum it `should be allowed to reach in the game, and the bottom string puts `the power in each section to the absolute maximum it could reach `even when cheating :- ~` Goto hex-offset 3BB1 and change the 16 bytes there to :- ` 4A 00 4A 00 DE 00 25 00 6F 00 6F 00 6F 00 6F 00 ~` - or - ` DE 00 DE 00 DE 00 DE 00 DE 00 DE 00 DE 00 DE 00 ~`Edit 2 - Increasing the Effectiveness of your Weapons ~`ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ `As you may know, your ship can fire 10 different types of missiles `and 10 different types of pulse cannons when it is at its most `powerful. However, at the beginning of the game only two `varieties of each will be at your disposal which will limit the `effectiveness of your shots. `It you are shooting a ship with no shield it doesn't matter which `type of pulse cannon or missile you use, as all cannons and `missiles have the same power. However, if your target does have a `shield then which type of cannon or missile you fire can be very `important. `Each shield is made up of high-intensity empion waves. Different `shields' waves are configured to different waveforms. The shots `from your cannons and missile-launchers also have their own `waveforms. If the shield you are shooting has the same waveform `as the missile/cannon you are shooting with, your shot will be far `more effective. Likewise, if your shot has a different waveform `to the target shield, the shot will be less effective. `As you go through the game you will be able to shoot more and more `different waveforms from your cannon and missile launchers. You `choose which waveform you shoot from the 'Weapons' menu. However, `after carrying out the two edits below your ship will have the `ability to shoot all 10 different waveforms of missiles and `cannons straight away, giving you a better chance against shielded `enemies. `Another thing you will find is that although you have unlimited `ammunition in your cannon, you have a very restricted number of `missiles to shoot. To get round this problem, the edit for giving `your ship all 10 different waveforms of missiles (below) will also `give you the maximum number of missiles it's possible to have at `once. `By entering the top sting of bytes below, you will equip your ship `with all 10 types of pulse cannon, and by using the bottom one you `will do the same for your missiles (and give yourself max `missiles into the bargain) :- ~` Goto hex-offset 34CA and change the 16 bytes there to :- ` 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 ~` Goto hex-offset 34EE and change the 16 bytes there to :- ` FF 00 FF 00 FF 00 FF 00 FF 00 FF 00 FF 00 ~`Edit 3 - Increasing the Effectiveness of your Shields ~`ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ `This edit is really an extension of the one above. As well as `wanting different waveforms of shots from your cannons/missile `launchers, it is also useful to have different waveforms of `shields at your disposal too, so you can protect yourself against `the different waveforms of shots that your enemies might have. `By looking at the statistics of an enemy ship by selecting `'Science' from the menu, or whilst in war mode, you can see what `types of waveforms their guns can fire. Once you know this you `can change the type of waveform your shield uses in order to give `yourself maximum protection. However, at the start of the game `you have only one type of shield at your disposal, so you have no `choice over which one you use. If you use this edit you will be `given all 7 types of shield giving you maximum protection against `all types of shot waveforms. ~` Goto hex-offset 3506 and change the 12 bytes there to :- ` 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 01 00 ~`ÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍÍ ` Auf Wiedersehn.... ` ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ ~` Simon Burrows ` ÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄ
